Reality check: Declining support, growing opposition
Third in a series - March 21, 2001

Opinion polls show that public support for the Toronto 2008 Olympic bid is falling, and at the same time opposition to public financing of the bid is growing.

CLAIM: ". . .80 per cent of people in this city support the bid," says Bob Richardson, of TO-Bid, March 9, 2001

FACT: Polls show support falling among people of Toronto and Ontario, while a majority oppose public funding for the Olympics.

Ipsos-Reid poll on Olympics, February 9, 1999:
- 77% of Torontonians support Olympic bid
- 88% of Ontarians support Olympic bid

Ipsos-Reid poll on Olympics, October 26, 2000:
- 70% of Torontonians support Olympic bid (a 10% drop in support since 1999)
- 73% of Torontonians oppose tax increase to pay for Olympics
- 84% of Torontonians oppose public debt for Olympics

Ipsos-Reid poll on Olympics, March 12, 2001:
- 64% of Ontarians support Olympics bid (a 27% drop in support since 1999)

Other polls reported publicly:

Last fall, CF polled Torontonians. When asked if they support the bid, 60% of those polled said yes. But when asked about public funding, the numbers are reversed. According to the pollsters: "50 per cent of those questioned thought 'the money spent on hosting the Olympics would be better spent on social programs,' compared with 37 per cent who disagreed".

During the municipal election in October, Ipsos-Reid polled Torontonians. They asked: "Which issues do you feel should receive the greatest attention from the Mayor and City Council following the upcoming municipal election?" Fully 24% said homelessness. Another 5% said housing. Add the two and almost one in every three people in this city want the Mayor and City Council to devote their attention to housing and homelessness. The Toronto Olympic bid was way down the list, favoured by only 10% of the people of Toronto.
